There’s a good chance your local library provides access. Look for the online databases on your local library webpage or ask a local librarian. Or, ask your school librarian if s/he uses Titlewave. You can get a free account at www.titlewave.com and search the catalogue by topic, author, genre, reading levels, and publication year.

  • The Horn Book Guide – This bi-annual reviews and rates all books published the previous year and is indexed by subject  - http://www.hornbookguide.com/cgi-bin/hbonline.pl. This link will take you to the online version where you can sign up for a free trial. Check to see if your local library has print copies.  Your local library may also have these reviews available in online databases. Horn Book Magazine reviews are available in Proquest and Academic Search Premiere and Horn Book Guide reviews are available in Proquest. Also, be sure to sign up for the free monthly Horn Book newsletter.

  • Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People – an annual listing compiled by the National Council for the Social Studies and the Children’s Book Council. Lists can be accessed on-line at http://www.ncss.org/resources/notable/

Locating Articles 

The following are recommended magazines for children and young adults. The publisher’s websites provide information about back issues, allowing you to purchase text sets on topics that you teach.
